In Santiago de Chile, dwelings are mainly located in four districts
or sectors which are closer to the center of the city, near all
services and points of cultural interest or entertainment. These
four sectors (administratively denominated COMUNAS) are:
Santiago Downtown
The center of the old Santiago de Chile is characterized by being
the civic district of the city, where you find the Government
House and the different Ministries, the Central Square (called
Plaza de Armas), the Cathedral, the Main Post Office and several
important museums. Housing in this area is older than that in
other districts, but you may find picturesque environments and
beautiful architecture. However, accommodations here are not of
much lower cost than what is offered in other areas, since houses
and apartments are located close to the Metro (i.e.the Santiago
subway) and locations of great cultural interest.
Providencia
Providencia is one of most solicited and preferred areas of Santiago
by travelers visiting Chile because it is a district where residential
and commercial areas become mixed. Most of its streets are characterized
by tall and beautiful trees, and along them are large houses of
style and modern buildings. Good routes of connection exist from
here toward the other important quarters of the city. The prices
of lodgings are of medium level; differences do exist between
those located closer to a Metro station compared to those being
close only to bus stops.
Las Condes
The most exclusive areas of the city are located in the districts
of Las Condes and Vitacura; for this reason, the prices of lodgings
may be higher than in the other districts. However, the quality
and modern features of its houses, added to the higher security
of this district, justify the difference. Most of the areas where
these housings are located have bus transportation only; at present
the Metro covers some of Las Condes but only with three stations,
all of them along the Apoquindo Avenue.
Ñuñoa
The characteristic of this district of the city is the charming
architecture of its low height houses, where large houses built
in the first half of the twentieth century certainly stand out;
most of them seem well protected by old trees. This is more a
middle class residential area that offers good alternatives for
lodging to visitors who wish to live on a lower budget. Ñuñoa
is well connected by the Metro Line 5, and in its perimeter there
are several university campuses.
